A half-dozen cool things in music, from two points of view:

Symphony Ball 2008, Orchestra Hall. The terrific Rajaton, a vocal ensemble from Finland, performed Abba songs. The highlight was "Mamma Mia!" just in time for the summer motion-picture musical starring Meryl Streep.

True Colors Tour, Target Center. Cyndi Lauper assembled an outstanding cast of musicians -- the B-52s, Tegan and Sara and the Cliks-- plus Rosie O'Donnell and emcee Carson Kressley. There was something for everyone at this fun and colorful celebration of diversity.

Meeting Barack Obama, Xcel Energy Center. As any big music fan knows, we all dream of meeting our favorite artist. Shaking Obama's hand at the rally meant more to me than meeting any rock star. He is a true rock star to me.

Coldplay, "Viva la Vida." Producer Brian Eno gives the British über-group an appealing sonic makeover, proving that less is more this time around. Eno has even reined in Chris Martin from soaring into the vocal stratosphere on every song. But his lyrics aren't any hipper or smarter. Out Tuesday.

Ashford and Simpson, the Dakota. Tremendous entertainers, stellar songwriters and average singers. Well, Valerie Simpson was above average, and Nick Ashford was below average, but their romantic ways redeemed their voices.

Prince Family Reunion, Cabooze. The band was too big, but the fun couldn't be denied. G Sharp showed voice and charisma on tunes featuring falsetto. ("Beautiful Ones" was a highlight.) Eric Leeds was smokin' on sax (especially on "Let's Work.") And guitarist/singer Dez Dickerson was a treat, especially on "Modernaire" from "Purple Rain."
