PERISHABLE REALITIES

In their collaborative paintings, Minneapolis-based Freddy Muñoz and Yvette Weijergang revel in the physicality of paint, its viscous sensuality, its drips and smears, and the gritty textures it achieves when mixed with dirt or sand. Their colorful, densely textured canvases can be read as abstractions or as images of flayed carcasses, slabs of rudely butchered meat, torn nets, burned documents, screaming beasts. As metaphor for the pulse and throb of life, their paintings look raw and angry but are -- they claim -- a celebration of the Mediterranean joy of life. Think Zorba the Greek in an Algerian abattoir. Tough stuff but probably the occasion for a wild opening. (Opening reception 6 -9 p.m. Fri., free. Gallery 13, 811 LaSalle Av., Mpls. Through Nov. 28. 612-592-5503 or www.gallery13.com)
