Paul Douglas: Blizzard winding down for historic April at MSP

April 14, 2018 at 8:48PM

The groundhog was right. But was it six more weeks, or six more months, of winter? So confusing. Sad!

Resist the urge to scream at the heavens or use your ice scraper as an improvised weapon. This too shall pass. We will dig out and savor a well-earned spring.

The pattern reminds me a little of 2013, when 18 inches of snow fell in April. For the record, the summer that followed was the 26th warmest on record, with 19 days at or above 90F. That's more prayer than prediction, but the short version: Don't write off a real summer just yet.

For nearly 20 years I've been telling you about a tendency for weather systems to slow or stall, for patterns to get stuck. Our historic April storm is moving in slow motion, prolonging light snow much of today. If we pick up more than 11.6 inches at MSP (likely), this will be the snowiest April on record, breaking the old record of 21.8 inches in 1983. For perspective, we picked up 32 inches all of last winter. Some towns will see that much this month. Weather-weirding indeed. Hold out for an expected 50F next weekend!

Perla is one of 113 UC employees found to have violated the system's sexual misconduct policies in rece
