Other Court action

A narrowly divided Supreme Court sided with a Florida fisherman, throwing out his conviction for tossing evidence — undersized grouper — back into the Gulf of Mexico under a federal law.

John Yates was convicted of violating a law that bars destruction of any tangible object to obstruct an investigation. Justices accepted his argument that fish are not the sort of objects the law meant.

The Supreme Court also effectively rejected North Carolina's tight control over the teeth-whitening business, ruling the Federal Trade Commission can charge the state Board of Dental Examiners with anti-competitive actions.
