Boston designated hitter David Ortiz missed Friday’s game at Toronto after losing his appeal of a suspension for making contact with an umpire, while Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto was suspended for one game and fined for the same act.

Votto’s trouble began when he struck out to end the third inning Wednesday against the Pirates. The 2010 National League MVP flung his bat and helmet to the ground. He then said something as he walked to his position and was ejected.

Votto charged umpire Chris Conroy and the two bumped chests before Reds manager Bryan Price intervened.

Ortiz bumped plate ump John Tumpane while protesting third base umpire Jerry Meals’ call on a check swing during an April 19 loss to Baltimore.
