Saturday highlight: 18-year-old Jake Deitchler's astonishing run to the 145 1/2-pound Greco-Roman title was the story of the day, but two veterans had a fine day as well. Brad Vering, 30, swept Aaron Sieracki in the finals of the Greco-Roman 185-pound class to make his second Olympic team, and T.C. Dantzler, 37, swept Cheney Haight to make his first Summer Games.
Minnesota update: Six wrestlers from the state competed in three Greco-Roman weight classes Saturday. Deitchler and Chas Betts, who finished fourth at 185 pounds, were joined by Jake Clark of South St. Paul, who went 3-2 in the 185-pound weight class and made it to the semifinals of the consolation bracket; Zac Nielsen of Zimmerman, who finished 2-2 at 185; and Jeremy Pederson of Becker, who went 0-2 at 185. In the 163-pound class, Andy Bisek of Chaska -- who competed despite a back injury -- beat Brandon McNab before losing to eventual finalist Cheney Haight.
Coming today: The trials end with competition in two Greco-Roman weight classes (211.5 pounds and 264 1/2 pounds) and four men's freestyle classes (163, 185, 211 1/2 and 264 1/2). Five more Minnesotans will have their turn at making the Olympic team: former Gophers Damion Hahn (211 1/2, freestyle) and Cole Konrad (264 1/2, Greco), Robbinsdale native R.C. Johnson (211 1/2, Greco), Winona's Max Lossen (264 1/2, Greco) and Minneapolis' Mark Simmonds (264 1/2, Greco).
