Balmer Sylvia Nelson, the daughter of L.L. and Tilda (Bendickson) Nelson, was born April 13, 1908, in Wallingford, Iowa and departed this life on Sunday, June 22, 2003, at the N.C. Little Memorial Hospice in Edina, Minnesota at the age of 95. She received her education in the rural country schools. Then graduated from Waldorf school in Forest City, Iowa. Sylvia received her nurse's training at Iowa Lutheran College in Des Moines, Iowa. She worked as a registered nurse at the Bernie Hospital and later Holy Family Hospital in Estherville. On May 23, 1943, she was united in marriage to Harry Balmer. After their marriage, the couple farmed the family farm near Dolliver until 1951, when they moved to a farm near Armstrong. They farmed there until retiring in 1976 and moving into Estherville. In 1993, they moved to Edina, Minnesota to be near their children. Harry died November 21, 1995. Sylvia was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church. Sylvia is survived by two children, Larry Balmer and his wife, Alice; Cheryl Hammer and her husband, Jerry all of Bloomington, Minnesota; and also by her two grandchildren, David and Alison Balmer, also of Bloomington. Preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters and two brothers. Funeral service 2 pm Saturday, June 28, 2003 at Estherville Lutheran Church, Estherville, IA. Pastor Ray Miller officiating. Interment Lincoln Township Cemetery, Dolliver, IA. Visitation one hour prior to service Saturday at church.
