Philip H. Grathwol
Grathwol Philip H., age 92 of St. Paul, born in Chicago, IL, Phil participated in the Battle of the Bulge campaign in WWII as part of the 16th Field Artillery Observation Battallion. He attended the Harvard School for Boys, received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, and worked in the St. Paul City Architect's office for many years. In his mid 50s he began flight training, did aerobatics, and became a flight instructor at age 66. He passed away peacefully in his apartment at Iris Park Commons on April 24. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Jo. He is survived by dear friends Darla Baker, Roger Youngs, Amy Amberg, and John Caruson; brother-in-law John Maher; first cousins Jane Burnish, Harriet Grieving, and Patricia McHale; cousins Bill and Colleen, Laura, and Greg Deuberry, Kate and Joel Kopp, and Father Michael O'Connell; and many other family and friends. A memorial mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis at 5 pm on May 14, followed by a gathering of family and friends from 7 to 9 pm at 964 Ashland Ave in St. Paul.
