Newell Martin Early Newell, of Tucson, Arizona, died March 13, 2003, after a very brief illness. He was 95. Mr. Newell was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 19, 1907. He graduated from the St. Thomas Military Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota School of Journalism. In 1928, he joined the Miller Publishing Co. in Minneapolis as an editorial assistant. He continued to serve this company in editorial and business capacities in subsequent years in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Kansas City. In 1957, he was elected chairman of the board of directors of the company. In 1960, with partner Thomas E. Letch, he formed Publishers Service, Inc., in Kansas City, which represented the Miller Publishing Co. and some other publishers in South Central and Southwestern states. He continued as president and treasurer of this firm until he retired to Tucson in 1973. In 1935, Mr. Newell married Helen Lillian Hickman of Winnipeg, Canada, who died in Tucson in 1974. In 1975, he married Frances Cole Schenker of Minneapolis, who died in Tucson in 1983. Surviving are three stepchildren: Carl R. Schenker, Jr. (Susan S. Richardson) of Washington, D.C., Dana M. Schroeder (Jon) and Noel F. Schenker of Minneapolis, and grandchildren Erin, Carl, and Helen Schroeder and Leigh and Quinn Shadko. An avid golfer, Mr. Newell was formerly a member of the Indian Hills Country Club of Kansas City and the Skyline Country Club of Tucson. He enjoyed painting and left treasured landscapes, cityscapes, and portraits of family members. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, March 22, at 11 am at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5029 Zenith Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55410. The family will greet friends at the church beginning at 10 am. Private interment at Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the University of Minnesota, School of Journalism Library Fund 2236, 101 Pleasant St. S.E., Rm. 225 Johnston Hall, Minneapolis, MN 55455 or to Christ the King Catholic Church.
