Dare Kevin James Dare, 19, of Port Matilda, died Saturday, February 23, 2002 in Minneapolis, MN, while competing at the Big 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships. Born April 16, 1982 in Woodbury, NJ, he was the son of Edward K. II and Terri DiGiacomo Dare. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. He graduated from State College Area High School in 2000. While in high school, he won the PIAA Outdoor Pole Vaulting title. He also was a defensive back and wide receiver for State College Area High School football team. He was a sophomore in the Business School at Penn State with a major in Marketing. He was a member of the Track and Field Team at Penn State, competing in the pole vault event. In June, 2001, he won the pole vault championship at the U. S. Track and Field Junior National Championships in Richmond, VA. He competed with Team USA and won the pole vault event against Great Britain. In the fall of 2001, he competed for the United States in the Pan American Junior Championships in Argentina. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Eric K. of State College; his maternal grandparents, Leonard and Anna Marie DiGiacomo of State College; and his paternal grandparents, Edward and Geraldine Dare of Williamstown, New Jersey. Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 27 from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, February 28 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 820 Westerly Parkway, State College with the Reverends Martin D. McCamley and Frantisek A. Halka officiating. Burial will be in Pine Hall Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to Kevin J. Dare Pole Vaulting Memorial Scholarship Fund, Penn State University, 1 Old Main, University Park, PA, 16802.
