Malone, Patrick J., S.J. Born: Feb. 13, 1959 in St. Paul Died: July 22, 2014 in Omaha Father Pat Malone died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones after 27 years of battling leukemia, and the complications of a bone marrow and two stem cell transplants. His life far transcended his illness, and he leaves an inspiring legacy of connecting with and ministering to the most margin-alized, the poorest, the most in need. His faith-filled journey took him to the Dominican Republic, to Mali, and to the Twin Towers in the immediate aftermath of 911. Born and raised in W. St. Paul, Pat graduated from Archbishop Brady High School and went on to get a degree in economics from the University of St. Thomas. He received a double MBA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, a degree in French from the University of Dakar in Senegal, and a Masters of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. He was also fluent in Spanish and a published author. After college, Pat joined the Peace Corps and served for 2 years in Mali, West Africa. He entered the Jesuit order in 1992 and was ordained in 2001. Pat served as chaplain to the workers at ground zero immediately after the 911 tragedy. From 2001 to 2006, he was a pastor at St. Luke's Parish, as well as campus minister at Macalester College. From 2006 to 2009, Pat was chaplain at the ILAC Mission near Santiago, in the Dominican Republic. Upon returning, Pat served at St. John's parish in Omaha, and was appointed pastor in 2012. Preceded in death by parents Elizabeth and Richard Malone and brother Tom. Survived by siblings Judy Bright (Benny); Robert (Deb); Mary (Craig Gelderman) and John (Diane), and family friend Mary Ellen Storms. He deeply influenced each of his nieces and nephews: Megan (Jack) Conner, Daniel Bright, Caitlin and Laura Malone; Teddy, Lizzie and Carly Gelderman; Ryan, Kevin and Jack Malone; great-nephew Benjamin Bright; and many cousins and friends. Funeral and burial will take place at St. John's Church on the Creighton University campus, Monday, July 28. A memorial service in Minnesota will be held Saturday, August 2 at St. Joseph's Church in West St. Paul, 11:00 a.m. with visitation an hour before. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Fr. Patrick Malone Scholarship Fund at Creighton University.
