Valliere Maurice F., age 91. Born in Skowhegan, ME, Oct. 27, 1910, died Feb. 3, 2002 at Redington-Fairview General Hospital, Skowhegan. Son of Walter M. (died in 1920) and Ora (Wyman) Valliere (died in 1977). He married Margaret Cates in Skowhegan; she died April 1, 1978. He served with the Army Air Corps during WWII, assigned to the 66th Fighter Squadron of the 57th Fighter Group as a mechanic in the ground crew in the North Africa Theater of Operations. He was employed by the American Woolen Co. in Skowhegan for many years until it closed in 1956. Then he worked for the Guilford Woolen Mill in Guilford until 1962; he worked for Kennebec Mills in Fairfield-Waterville from 1962-1968 then Maine Spinning Co. from 1968 until he retired in 1972. He was a lifelong resident of Skowhegan. Life member of the Joseph R. Sanford VFW Post, a member of the Peters-Shortier American Legion, both in Skowhegan; a life member of the Disabled American Veterans of America; a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Somerset Masonic Lodge #34-Skowhegan. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and playing cribbage. He was known as a visitor and helper for many people around town and a good friend. Survived by daughter, Judy (Bruce) Fenlason of Biddeford, ME; granddaughter, Sara Fenlason of Mpls; sister-in-law, Helen Cates Clifford of Glen Falls, NY; 2 nieces and 1 nephew. Predeceased by brother, Lloyd Valliere who died in 1936 and sister, Ruth Watson who died in 1988. Friends may gather Thursday, Feb. 7, 4-7 pm, for a public celebration of Maurice's life with stories & memories to begin at 5 pm with Rev. Mark Tanner hosting at the Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan, ME. Graveside service later in the spring at Southside Cemetery, Skowhegan. Donations may be made to the Good Will Hinckley School, PO Box 154, Hinckley, ME 04944 or to the Kidney Foundation of Maine, PO Box 1134, Portland, ME 04104. Friends are asked to take just a minute a day to pray to their God for world-wide peace and for food for the hungry.
