Ueland Margaret Lavery, age 97, of Minneapolis, died peacefully on January 12. A member of the League of Women Voters since 1934, she was devoted to community service with special interests in affordable housing and child welfare. She was honored by the Mpls. League with the Bess Mnlarik Award in 1972 given for outstanding service to the organization. Born January 14, 1904 in Fort Pierre, SD, she attended the U of SD and graduated from the U of MN, class of 1925. While pursuing graduate studies in psychiatric social work at Smith College, she married Rolf Ueland in 1929. She was a board member of the Community Chest Health Service, the League of Women Voters of Minneapolis and the Lake Harriet School PTA. As a volunteer for the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Planned Parenthood and First Unitarian Society, she was especially active in fund raising. Her many interests included music, literature, art, nature, gardening and cooking. She is survived by her children, Eric, Mark and Clara Ueland; grandchildren, Mara Humphreys, Anne Bailey and Michael Ueland and 6 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the First Unitarian Society of Mpls on Thurs., Jan. 24, 2 pm. Memorials are suggested to the Clara H. Ueland Fellowship Fund for women in political science c/o Univ. of MN Foundation, the League of Women Voeters, or donor's choice. Twin Cities Cremation 612-866-6711
