McAllister June Zumwinkle McAllister There are people in this busy, noisy world who are so quiet, so modest, so undemanding of attention, so lacking in need for recognition and reward - that it is possible for such a person to slip by rather unnoticed, even if that person has lived a life of exceptional quality and has possessed attributes desperately needed. One such person was June Zumwinkle McAllister, who: - had an abiding com mitment to family; - had a special connection with children and young adults; - loved beauty in nature, music, the visual arts, and architecture; - was deeply offended by instances of social and economic injustice; - was always available to offer unconditionally kind words and comfort to neighbors, friends, and family; - continued to learn throughout her entire life. Is it any wonder that her friends and family loved her, were inspired by her, and are so thankful to be forever indebted to her? June McAllister, age 81, passed away on October 21, 2003. A memorial service / "celebration of her life" will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Avenue South, Edina, Minnesota. June was born on June 26, 1922 in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. In 1940, she graduated from Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis. June attended the University of Minnesota for four years, majoring in Architecture. She was one of few women attending the school's Institute of Technology at that time. While at the University of Minnesota, June met dental student, Charles McAllister, whom she married on August 5, 1946. Shortly afterward, June accompanied her husband to Germany where he was stationed for two years. As Dr. McAllister built a thriving dental practice in the 1950's, June became a mother adored by her kids and neighbors alike. She and Charles moved to Edina in 1953, where they lived for fifty years. With equal portions of modesty and humor, June was the moral compass of her family. June enjoyed most quiet activities such as reading, listening, watching, and working in her yard. June was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Minnette Zumwinkle; her brother, Richard Zumwinkle; and sister-in-law, Lois "Liz" Zumwinkle. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Dr. Charles McAllister of Edina; her son, Robert McAllister and his wife Genie and daughter Lauren; her son, Bruce McAllister and his wife Clare and children Janna and Andrew; her brother, Robert Zumwinkle and his wife Kate; her sister, Barbara Mathewson and her husband Don; her sister-in-law, Margaret Zumwinkle; and nine nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of June may be made to Minnesota Public Radio, 45 East Seventh Street, St. Paul, MN 55101 (651-290-1212 or 800-228-7123).
