Leventhal, Larry a prominent Twin Cities civil rights attorney, died Jan. 17, 2017, after a heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. Larry was born 4/28/41 in Mpls to Sally and Robert "Ruby" Leventhal. He is predeceased by his parents and his beloved daughter, DeGalynn Wade Sanders, who died in 2016. Larry is survived by son-in-law, Lance Sanders; beloved grandsons, Landen & Logan Sanders; sister and brother-in-law, Paula and Bob Maisel; nieces, Lisa (Paul) Gendler, Julie Maisel, and Debbie (Dan) Levin; grandnieces and grandnephews, Joely, Parker, Elliott, and Sara; and a host of wonderfully supportive cousins. Also mourning Larry's loss is his longtime devoted and loving significant other, Vicki Schraber. Larry's distinguished legal career spanned 50 years during which he was known for his legal talents, ethical standards, tenacity, and his compassion for others. He fought hard for his clients until recent months when he fought valiantly for his own life. He was one of the country's experts on Indian treaty law which he used in support of the defendants of Wounded Knee, the restoration of tribal sovereignty for the Delaware Indians and the many other struggles of the American Indian Movement (AIM). Larry led a full life beyond his professional career. He was an avid reader and Vice Sheik of the local Laurel and Hardy Club. He was a collector of memorabilia and art relating to Laurel and Hardy, other noteworthy entertainers and to Walt Disney. Larry co-owned and ran a 100 acre campground where he spent summer weekends tending to his garden and hosting family and his many friends. The family wishes to thank the staffs of HCMC and Sholom Home West for their skilled and loving care during Larry's last journey.
