Monaghan, George Henry Jr. Born on 12/16/30 to George Henry Monaghan, Sr. and Ellen Farley Monaghan at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He died of complications of a stroke on March 2, 2016. George graduated from Soldan HS in St. Louis, and from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Over his 40-year career he worked as a journalist at the News Tribune in Jefferson City, MO; the News-Gazette in Champaign, IL; the Houston Chronicle; the Globe Democrat of St Louis, MO; and the News Journal in Wilmington, DE before joining the staff of the Minneapolis Star in 1977. He retired from the Star Tribune in 1994. He covered police, science, business and human interest stories. George received the Herbert J. Davenport Fellowship in Economics reporting in 1976. He was a strong supporter of the Newspaper Guild. He loved nature and was an avid bicyclist; he rode in many of the Jaunts with Jim and two RAGBRAIs. George was a volunteer at Abbott Northwestern Hospital for seven years, and an active member of the Midtown YWCA for many years. He developed a talent for drawing and watercolor; one of his most beloved works was "The Pig who would be Winston Churchill." He was preceded in death by his parents, by his special aunt and uncle, Vivian and Milton Israel, and by his first wife and the mother of his children, Beverly Cramer. George is survived by his wife, Diana "Deb", daughter Denise (Charlie Kaufman), son Dan (Amy), step-daughter Kate (Ewart) Da-Souza, and by grandchildren Daniel, Anna, Alexander, and Nikolai; brothers Tom (Joye), Bill (Roberta Bracker), half-sister Sally (Mike) Deitch; and by many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends. A memorial service will be held at St Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 4537 3rd Ave S in Minneapolis, Thursday, March 17 at 4 PM preceded by a gathering time at 3:30 PM. A burial service is planned for the summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to charity of donor's choice. 612-871-1234
