Steffer, Vernon S. age 82, of Edina, MN. Born January 26, 1925 in Duluth, MN. Passed away peacefully on September 12, 2007 surrounded by family. Cause of death was pancreatic cancer. Preceded in death by his parents and six of seven siblings. Survived by loving wife, Pat and family: Carrie & Steve Petersen, Allison & Andy; Mark & Jolene Steffer, Erica & Megan; Kate Steffer, Zachary & Nicolas; John Steffer & Julie Lochner, Emma & Jack and brother George & wife, Barb. He will also be missed by extended family and a legion of friends. After a childhood in Duluth and Hugo, Vern served in WW II, attended Macalaster College where he met Pat and went on to teach in Morgan, Minnesota Lake, and Princeton, Minnesota. Having a spirit of adventure, in 1958 they opted to work for the Department of Defense Schools which took their family to Spain and Japan. After 8 years abroad he returned to Minnesota where he was a librarian and coordinator for the Burnsville schools. He was an active member of Edgewater Emmanuel United Methodist Church, its choir, and a host of community and political endeavors. He embraced a love of family and a variety of hobbies which included woodworking, furniture building, gardening, the arts, and community theater. He exhorted his children to make the world a better place which he did by example for all to see. Memorials are preferred to Macalaster College (St. Paul), Cancer Society of Minnesota, Edgewater Emmanuel Church, or the N.C. Little Memorial Hospice (7019 Lynmar Lane, Edina, MN 55435). A celebration of his life will be held at Edgewater Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 5144 13th Ave S., Mpls 55417, on Saturday, September 15 at 1:00 p.m. with dessert to follow.
