Mitchell Joseph "Mitch" Callahan completed his final endurance event and passed away peacefully on June 20, 2024, at New Perspectives adult care facility in Columbia Heights, MN, due to complications from a respiratory infection and a nearly two-decade-long struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. Mitch was born on September 3, 1963, the third of four children to Paul and Pauline Callahan, and he grew up on the southside of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Mitch was a fun-loving, often mischievous, kid, and while he was never an enthusiastic student or avid athlete while young, he generated lots of laughs and developed a life-long habit of making good friends from a wide range of people drawn to his open mind and kind heart. As an adult, Mitch discovered a love for running and began a habit of running ten miles EVERY day. He was good at it too, and he completed numerous marathons, triathlons and countless other endurance events. Mitch also found his footing in the classroom, earning a BS in Nursing and a Master of Science in Business Administration, and he began a successful career as a nurse, a profession he truly loved and one that made his family, especially his mother, also a nurse, very proud. At the end of his working life, he was Clinic Manager at Creekside Park Nicollet Health Services and was named one of the top nurses in the Park Nicollet system. Along the way, Mitch continued to make people around him laugh and feel welcome and valued, and it was a testimony to the person he was when, on his last full day on earth, he was visited by friends representing all facets of his life, as well as many of the care staff at New Perspectives, who had come to know him over the past several months. Mitch loved to run and loved working as a nurse, but his greatest love, and his finest, most enduring accomplishment, was his children, Vince, April, and Ellie. Being their father was the greatest joy of his life, and he loved nothing more than talking about them and cheering them on and trying to support them, with whatever means he could. And the results of that love show - Vince is an RN in Portland, OR. April just completed an MSW and will soon begin her career as a social worker. And Ellie is in her second year of college with the intention of becoming a nurse. Mitch led a joy-filled, complicated, and often difficult life, and he was ready to leave his failing, MS-ravaged body. But his spirit will live on in the many light-hearted memories of his friends and in the kind hearts and care-centered lives of his kids. Mitch leaves behind his son Vince, of Portland, OR, his daughter April of Roseville, MN and his daughter Ellie of St. Louis Park, MN. He is also survived by his brother, Matt (Teresa), his sister, Molly (Terry), his brother-in-law, Todd, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and, finally, his life-long friends Matt Keller and Chuck Whitesell, who stood by Mitch's side for nearly fifty years. Mitch was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Pauline, and his sister, Angie. Memorials are preferred to Mitch Callahan family, 2724 Brunswick Ave So, St. Louis Park, MN 55416. A celebration of Mitch's life will be held at the Louisiana Oaks Park building in St. Louis Park, MN on August 4th from 3-5 PM.
