Stifter, Anton Joseph "Tony" died peacefully at 2:43 pm on June 10, 2023 with family near. Born on March 16, 1931 in Newark, New Jersey, Tony is the son of Anton and Mary Stifter and was married to Adele Saltarrelli Stifter, all of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his four children: Catherine Stifter (and her spouse Christina Myers) Elizabeth Stifter, Mark Stifter (and his wife Joan) and Carolyn Blake (and her husband Chris). Tony has three grandchildren, Chris, Eric and Anna Stifter, all of whom are Mark's children. Anton graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1956 and practiced family medicine in Pikeville, Kentucky and Winsted, Minnesota. In 1971 he became the first Director of the Emergency Services Department at Unity Hospital in Fridley, Minnesota and worked in the ER until his retirement in 1992. He was a founding member of the Emergency Physicians Professional Association (EPPA) and served on the Board of Directors from 1971-78. Fully dedicated to his profession, he brought hundreds of babies into this world and saved thousands of lives. Tony was a commercial - and instrument - rated pilot and an accredited medical examiner. He was a proud and enthusiastic member of the Great Lakes Chapter of the Flying Physicians Association, and also found joy and freedom while learning to sail at the Offshore Sailing School on Captiva Island. After his retirement Tony found friendship and camaraderie through cycling. In 2011, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Twin Cities Bicycling Club after serving as Treasurer "For Life" and member of the Board of Directors and accumulating an impressive number of Male Mileage Leader trophies. Tony's neighbors enjoyed his sense of humor and his colorful flower garden. He savored traveling with his children and their spouses to New Zealand, Tanzania and the Galapagos Islands. He kept his mind sharp learning Italian online and in-person with the Italian Cultural Center of Minneapolis. One of his last adventures was to a language immersion school in Sicily. Tony was able to live independently as he had planned. His family is grateful for the loving home care of Dayna Gustafson, who made all our lives better. Ciao Tonino. Riposa in pace. Viaggi sicuri. (Rest in peace. Safe travels.) A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 26, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Avenue South, Edina. 952-924-4100.
