Heidenreich, Douglas R. 90, peacefully and calmly dropped off the twig on January 4, 2023. Preceded in death by brother Raymond, parents Raymond and Pearl, first wife Jean, wife Mary Landgraf. Survived by children Lisa (Michael Fleming), Beth and John; grandchildren Emily Niemi (Sam), Olivia, Ivy, Isabelle Heidenreich, Morgan Fleming; seven great grandchildren; nephew David; niece Barbara Hembey; cat Zoey; and longtime friend Phebe Haugen, who was with him at the end. Born on February 29, 1932, Doug was a St Paul boy at heart. As a teenager and student, he had jobs at a gas station and at Sanitary Dairy where his father drove a milk truck. He attended the University of Minnesota, playing football and majoring in math. After two years in the Army stationed in Germany, he attended William Mitchell College of Law while working full time. He practiced law briefly, then returned to William Mitchell in 1963 as professor and assistant dean. He served as Dean from 1965 to 1975 and continued to teach full time until 2017. A self-proclaimed curmudgeon, he loved teaching the law and made a strong impression on everyone who knew him. He traveled extensively, most often to France. He was a historian, bibliophile, musicophile and an animal lover. The world will not be the same without him. An event in his honor will be planned at Mitchell Hamline School of Law this Spring. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a gift to the Professor Douglas Heidenreich Scholarship Fund, Mitchell Hamline School of Law, 875 Summit Ave, St Paul, MN 55105 or to the animal-related charity of your choice.
