Holte, James E.

90 years old, died at home in the embrace of loving family on February 10th, 2022.

A lifelong educator, his 55 years as professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of MN reflected his deep belief in the nobility of education, and in the inherent dignity of all learners. Instinctive ally of the underdog, he was a particular champion of the nontraditional student, the underrepresented, and the disadvantaged, whom he felt privileged to serve and mentor.

A lifelong learner, he retained always a curious and flexible mind, continuously consuming and synthesizing new information; he adjusted his attitudes and beliefs with the humility of the devout student of life, and evolved according to the lessons it taught.

Gratitude was the animating spirit of his life, and the sentiment he expressed most often. The loving warmth he radiated is felt even more acutely in his absence, and is the greatest example he set for his children.

Preceded in death by his son Tom (Mindy) and his first spouse Virginia, he is survived by his son Christian (Naté), daughters Sarah (Tim), Martha (Nessa), Amanda (Chris), and Nora (Scott), grandchildren James, Gabriel, Greta, and Peter, stepchildren Jennie, Caroline (Gregory), Paul (Jen), David, Andrew (Joy), and Ben (Lindsay), former spouse and perpetual best friend, Judy, and his esteemed canine colleague, Archie. An occasion for remembrance to be held in the spring.
