William 'Jim' Hall

Hall, William "Jim" age 91 of Minnetonka, passed away peacefully on September 5th at his home in Minnetonka. Preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Betty (Aker), who passed in January 2021, parents James and Mary Hall and sister Patty Fitzgerald. He is survived by his 6 children: Mike (Louise), Tom (Kathy), Bill (Beth), Kathy (Brian) Blanchard, Dan, Rob (Barb), 14 grandkids, 19 great- grandkids. Also survived by siblings: Tom, Dick and Mary Alice as well as a close extended family of nieces, nephews and many cherished friends. The oldest of 5 children, Jim was born in Minneapolis where he spent his childhood at 44th and Xerxes. He attended Dunwoody Institute which led to a career in engineering, with his favorite position being with Minneapolis Moline as a project engineer. His love and knowledge of anything mechanical resulted in countless calls from the family asking for advice. Jim proudly served in the Navy from 1948-1969 as a plane Captain and enjoyed the opportunity to travel the world during his service, with a special place in his heart for Alaska. Every time a plane flew overhead he would look up and identify the type of aircraft. While coaching a women's softball team, Jim 'caught' the eye of Betty, who played on the team. The couple married in the fall of 1954. Together, they raised their 6 kids in a Minnetonka house they ultimately called home for 60+ years. He coached his kids' numerous baseball and hockey teams throughout the years. Jim enjoyed spontaneous backyard picnics, the annual Hall Christmas Eve celebration, attending the grandchildren's sports and school programs as well as watching the Wild, Twins and Vikings. He could often be found puttering at his workbench, in the garage, or out in the yard. His camera was always ready to capture family moments or beautiful scenery. Jim and Betty always remained close to their Catholic faith and were active members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Minnetonka. Jim grew and shared plants and was the Cactus Whisperer. Jim maintained his Naval friendships and met regularly with his friends from the service. He also shared a special relationship with his brothers, who he met for breakfast nearly every week. Jim was an avid golfer for many years and twice recorded a hole in one! He and Betty greatly enjoyed spending winters in Arizona, but always returned to family in Minnesota. Jim and Betty had a profound impact on their large family, who are proud to continue their legacy. Heartfelt thanks to hospice nurse Nancy Nixon for her comfort care and the employees of The Glenn. A private memorial service for the family will be held at IHM Church. A burial at Fort Snelling will be held in the spring.
