Strauss, Mary Murphy Age 79, of Edina, MN and Delray Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 8, 2021, with loving family at her side. Preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Geneva Murphy; and brother, Edward Murphy, Jr. Survived by her beloved husband of more than 50 years, George Strauss; children, Eric Strauss (Laura), Stephanie Oceguera (Luis), and Craig Strauss (Leigh); grandchildren, Greta 14, Sebastian 10, Isabelle 6, Caitlin 12, and Ellie 9; and brother, John Murphy (Marte). Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Mary grew up in Philadelphia, PA. She worked as a Registered Nurse where she met her husband, George, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Together, they lived in West Point, NY, San Francisco, CA, Marshfield, WI, Minneapolis, MN, and Delray Beach, FL. Mary was a member of Temple Israel for 45 years, where she served for several years as President of the Temple Israel Sisterhood. She was the quintessential hostess, including hosting book group discussions with friends for more than 40 years. Family was everything to Mary. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who doted on her family and friends with her warm smile and kind heart. She was an avid and admired knitter whose friends and neighbors often sought her advice and guidance. Mary enjoyed knitting cruises and traveled to yarn stores and knitting workshops around the world, sharing her passion for her craft with her daughter, granddaughters, and friends. She was never without a knitting project in her hands and outfitted her family and friends with warm socks, hats, beautiful sweaters, and shawls. Mary was an experienced Mahjong player; a frequent traveler by air, road, and ship; and an outstanding cook and baker. She especially enjoyed trips to Hong Kong, Belgium, Provence in France, and England. She was extremely intelligent, insightful, and caring. Mary was an avid reader and season ticket holder over many years with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Guthrie Theater, and Jungle Theater. She loved concerts, plays, and movies. Mary was a member of the condominium boards at both Grandview Square and Boca Delray Golf & Country Club, where she founded a thriving craft group. Mary's English Cake was a favorite at family gatherings for decades and will be missed by family and friends far and wide.
