Lavin, James William 83, of Richfield, MN passed away on January 27, 2021. Jim was born Nov. 22, 1937 on the West Side of St. Paul, a neighborhood he fondly remembered. He was proud of his Irish ancestry and had no trouble sharing that pride. Jim served in the Navy and traveled abroad while stationed on the USS Randolph. When he returned to MN, he turned his love of cars into a career. Jim's pride and joy was always his family. He was not only proud of them, but he gushed over them to anyone who would listen. He always left you with a big hug and an "I love you babe." His hobbies included coaching his kids' sports teams, carpentry, golfing, bowling, movie collecting and gardening. In his last years, Jim had Alzheimers. And while the disease stole his memories, it didn't steal his sense of humor or his love of family. He entertained the staff and residents at Mt. Olivet Home with his wit, grand stories and singing. We are forever grateful for the kind and compassionate care he received there. Third floor staff, you are the BEST!

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William & Lillian (Swanson) Lavin, sisters & brothers-in-law Jean (Larry) Campeau, Marcella (Ray) Martin, Pat (Robert) Hansen, and Kathleen Minder. Also by brother-in-law Art Sauter, nephew Jeff Hansen & niece Robyn Hansen.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathleen, and his children Joe (Heidi) Lavin, Maggie (Sam) Weaver of Boulder, CO, Peter (Tina) Lavin and Michael (Laurie) Lavin as well as his 9 adoring grandchildren whom he affectionately nicknamed: Olivia (Love Cakes), McKinley (Princess), Timothy (O'Toole), Sara (Bara), Will (The Thrill), Anna (Banana), Maxwell (Maxy Slapsy Rosenbloom), Claire (Burger Breath) and Henry (Hammerin' Hank). He is also survived by brother & sister-in-law, Jerry & Betty Sauter, and brothers-in-law, Gene Sauter & Gary Minder, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials preferred to Mt. Olivet Home, 5517 Lyndale Ave. S., Mpls., MN 55419 or "The Outreach Fund" at St. Joan of Arc Church, 4537 Third Ave. S., Mpls., MN 55419.

Above all else, Jim loved his family. In his memory, take a moment to hug a family member and tell them "I love you babe." Trust us-it makes a difference!
