Hulbert, James R. Passed away on December 8, 2020, at age 76 in Saint Paul, MN. He was born in Detroit, MI to Francis and Margaret (Rentenbach) Hulbert in 1944. He graduated from Washington high school in Cedar Rapids, IA, received a bachelor's degree in German and a master's degree in school counseling from the University of Iowa, and a PhD in Family Studies from Iowa State University. He worked as a German teacher, a school counselor, a health care statistician, and a professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University, retiring in 2015. Jim had a facility with world languages, studying Chinese, Malay, Spanish, and French as well as German. His interest in people and cultures led him to study in Germany and to volunteer for Peace Corps service in Sarawak, Borneo. He was passionate about his Cairn terriers, maps and geography, and corresponding with friends and relatives worldwide. Jim will be remembered for his wit, his breadth of knowledge and interests, his joy of life, and his appreciation of a good craft beer. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sue Ellen Bell; sister Janet (Dave) Young of Riverton, WY; brother Jerry (Helen) Hulbert of Sumas, WA; sister-in-law, Martha Bell of Palatine, Ill.; and brothers-in-law David (Mary) Bell of Bradenton Beach, FL, and Scott (Larry Allen) Bell of Tianjin, China. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials can be sent to the Neighborhood Network for Seniors, Our Lady of Peace Hospice, or the Center for Victims of Torture, all in Saint Paul, MN; or the statistics department at Iowa State University, Ames, IA c/o the Iowa State University Foundation.
