David Lee Young
Age 88 of Apple Valley, MN passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 11, 2020. Dave was born December 17, 1931. He is now reunited with his wife of 66 years Susan Guild Young.
He is preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth Baker and Garfield Grant Young, his sisters Constance Young & Nancy MacIssac, and his wife Susan. He is survived by his children David “Curt” Young (Deborah) and Rebecca Cook (Frederick); grandchildren Katherine Courchane (Stephen), Alexandra Meyer (Brock) and Daria Young; sister Prudence Gaston (Dick) and brother Peter Young (Marlene).
He had many interests including golf, fishing, piloting small aircraft, skiing, woodworking, photography and travel both domestic and international.
He was an Army veteran and active in many civic organizations. Dave was past master counselor of Crown Point Chapter Order of DeMolay and master Mason at St. John’s Lodge 41 both of Springfield, VT. He served as the 74th Potentate of Ali Ghan Shrine in Cumberland MD and as a member of the 32nd Degree Knight Commander Court of Honor, Ritualistic Team Legion of Honor, and Court 117 Royal Order of Jesters.
Other memberships included the Maryland Manufacturers Assoc. (Exec. Comm.), Allegany Community College (Board of Trustees), Potomac Council Boy Scouts of America (past president), Tri-Towns Rotary Club, the United Methodist Church (Piedmont, WV; Sarasota, FL; Burnsville, MN) and several professional organizations.
Dave was born in Staten Island, NY, raised in Springfield, VT, obtained his BA from DePauw University and Masters from Illinois Institute of Technology. He retired from Westvaco paper company following 30+ years of employment. Although he lived in many locations, he was always a ‘Vermonter’ at heart and loved many things New England like maple syrup, Crowley cheese, lobster, autumn leaves and snow. Family was always a priority for him and he thrived spending time with his loved ones at home, on vacation, and at family reunions. He will be greatly missed.
