Smith, Lois Marilyn 91, our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, died peacefully on Thursday, November 5, 2020 at Friendship Village of Bloomington. Born February 24, 1929 to Warren and Alice Estabrook, Lois was a unique and caring individual who touched the lives of all who knew her. She was, by her own admission, a tomboy whose older brother, Don, made sure to include in the neighborhood games. She loved hanging out with her Dad and assisted him with his interior decorating business. Fun loving, competitive, and spunky to the end, she loved to laugh, host a gathering, and was the life of the party. She was also a hard worker, never content to settle but always seeking to expand her skills and knowledge. Her favorite pastimes were golf, tennis, bridge, and spending time with family and friends. And then came Bill. While attempting to catch some rays on the roof of her home, a young man working in a nearby garage took notice of the attractive young Lois and made it his mission to marry her. In 1959, she said "yes" and married Bill Smith, the love of her life. Together they built a family and raised 3 loving children. During the years that would follow, they could be found golfing at Braemar Golf Course, Olympic Hills Golf Club, or Hazeltine National Golf Club, traveling with family and friends, skiing the slopes and the water, playing tennis, and hosting family and neighborhood gatherings. If an activity involved people, they were 'all in' as they mutually loved getting to know others and spent much time in the company of family and friends. In their later years, they joined the snowbird crowd and spent their retirement years in Rio Verde, Arizona doing what they loved most; golfing and enjoying the company of others. After Bill's passing, Lois would continue her love of life, learning, and people. She joined the local Church Choir, organized events of all kinds, and invested in her golf skills regularly even up to the final year of her life! Lois was preceded in death by her loving husband of 41 years Bill Smith, parents Warren and Alice Estabrook, brother Don and his wife Lavone Estabrook, mother in law Wilhelmina Smith, brother and sister-in-law Ken and Marge Murphy, John Smith, Donna Rachel, and Fred Smith. Lois will be greatly missed by her children Alice and her husband Rich Madden, Patti and her husband Scott Harris, Tom and his wife Maggie Smith; grandchildren Henry Madden, Peter Madden, Taylor Harris, Sam and his wife Shelbi Harris, Caleb Harris, Anna Smith; brother and sisters-in-law Irene Smith, Carolyn Smith, Jim Smith and Patty Hargreaves, Nancy and her husband Ed DeRenzis; and many dear nieces and nephews. A private service will be held at Fort Snelling, where Lois will be laid to rest next to Bill. An outdoor event will be planned next summer to celebrate Lois' life with family and friends. Details will be communicated in a follow up obituary prior to the event. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Friendship Village Employee Appreciation Fund ("EAF", Friendship Village, 8100 Highwood Drive, Bloomington, MN 55438) or to the American Cancer Society.
