Buddha John Charles Carmody, aged 72, died on December 9, 2019, surrounded by loved ones, after a long and heartbreaking illness. He is survived by his wife Lynda Horness, her son Gene Hunt (Viviane Hunt), his sister Patricia Carmody (Craig Yunker), his son Patrick Michael Carmody (Leslie Kelman), his daughter Kate Luisa Carmody (Kyle Barron-Cohen), and his beloved grandchildren Fern Katherine Jane and Bear Sweet William Carmody, along with a lifetime of family, friends, colleagues, students and admirers. John was born in Minneapolis to Bob (Harold Robert) and Shirley (Wallin) Carmody. In 1976, he married Katherine Jeanne (Erickson) Carmody, and they were together until her death in 2008. John's near 50-year career began as an architect with the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic, after which he enjoyed a long and fulfilling career at the College of Design at the University of Minnesota as a student, researcher, mentor, teacher and Professor. He was Associate Director at the Underground Space Center for many years and founding Director of the Center for Sustainable Building Research. He was the recipient of numerous awards, a prolific writer, international speaker and author of more than a dozen books. John's kindness, compassion, appreciation for beauty, search for peace, and sense of humor will be remembered by all whose lives he touched. A celebration of John's life and exhibition of his work is being planned for Spring 2020.
