Schroeder, John Cahalan On Saturday, March 30th, 2019 John Cahalan Schroeder of Minneapolis, MN passed away at the age of 80. Born in Detroit, MI, he spent his youth as an avid rower and a beloved Latin tutor. John began his adult life as an Augustinian friar, and moved on to pursue graduate studies in English. During this period he taught writing at the Justin Morrill College of Michigan State University and developed and taught a legal writing course. He continued his career as a speechwriter for Chrysler and 3M, and undoubtedly would have composed a much more eloquent obituary than his family has pieced together. In retirement, John volunteered in the courts, washed dishes at Loaves and Fishes and listened to the homeless. A lifelong learner, he traveled to Guatemala to learn Spanish and started melodica lessons. John lived a full and interesting life, but above all, he will be remembered for the kindness and love he showed to everyone he met. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Claire, his children Elizabeth and Jack (Jess) Schroeder, stepson Stephen (Lindsay) Lewis, sister Ann Sullivan, grandsons Eddie and David, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at St. Joan of Arc Church at 4537 3rd Ave S in Minneapolis, Saturday, April 6th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Foundation for Autism Research (NFAR.org) or the National Immigration Law Center (NILC.org).
