Smith, Sr. Margery Sister of St. Joseph and beloved St. Catherine University professor, died on March 14, 2018 at Carondelet Village, St. Paul. Born in Canton, Ohio, February 12, 1928, Margery earned a B.A. at the College of St. Catherine and a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. After an impressive teaching career in the English department (1968-93) and service as Archives Director (1993-2011), she earned the 2011 Alumnae Award. Her high standards of excellence, deep knowledge and reverence for great literary works combined with a dry wit and eloquence inspired students to love learning. Margery was a founder of the St. Catherine Antonian Scholars Honors Program. A courageous woman with a delightful feistiness, she knew how to speak truth to power. To her last days, her intellect and faith remained strong. Preceded in death by parents, Agnes Marie Mellon and Earl Clement Smith; sister, Eleanor S. Fox; brothers William M. Smith and Stephen Smith, Margery is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, the Sisters of St. Joseph and Consociates, former colleagues and friends. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2018 at Our Lady of Presentation Chapel, 1880 Randolph Ave., St. Paul, preceded by visitation at 10 a.m. and followed by luncheon.
