Visage closes

Add Visage to the growing list of nightclub closings in downtown Minneapolis (already recently shuttered: Trocaderos, Axis, Element and Bellanotte). Even after a capacity crowd came out to see rapper Gorilla Zoe on Saturday, Visage still closed its doors the following night. "They have been evicted for nonpayment of rent," said Lowell Osterbauer, the building's owner. Visage (French for "face") opened in 2006 as a European-style club specializing in fashion shows and electronic music. In the past year, Visage did an about-face -- so to speak -- by ditching the Euro flavor for a hip-hop vibe. The club regularly held shows by mainstream rappers such as Twista, J-Kwon and Project Pat. With the new Twins stadium next door, general manager Kevin Spahn said they had been intending to remodel the club into a sports bar. Osterbauer is already fielding calls from people interested in the space, he said.

A new spin on an old space

After several delays, the new nightclub from the owner of Spin opens Saturday in the basement of the Lumber Exchange Building. I recently got a sneak peek at Club New York and I'll have to say, it looks pretty slick. Clubgoers should remember the space -- it's gone through three incarnations since 2006. First it was Level, then Foundation and finally Element. Owner Mike Whitelaw has turned the spot into an upscale hip-hop club with VIP booths lining the dance floor.

Breast friends

In the Twin Cities, Sabra Love is the queen of breast benefits. In 2006, Love learned that she had breast cancer and she has been throwing parties ever since to benefit breast-cancer groups. Her Carpe Mammae productions often mix bands with burlesque. This year's show, with a Caribbean theme, is titled "Carnivale de la Vida." Expect fire dancers, aerial artists, snake charmers, magicians and a costume contest. The event, which benefits the Aliveness Project and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, lost its original venue in June when Trocaderos closed. It will now be held at Epic.

Thriller night

No one will laugh at you if you wear a white glove Saturday night at Bar-Fly. It's preferred, actually. The downtown club is throwing a Michael Jackson tribute. It'll feature music and videos by the deceased King of Pop, plus a costume contest. Bar-Fly will also offer its usual Saturday-night drink special: Any coin, any cocktail (9-11 p.m.).

9 p.m. Sat. 711 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls. $6 for 21 and older. $7 for women 18 and older. $9 for men 18 and older. 612-333-6100.
