NHL notes: Ex-Blues player, Ottawa coach dies of cancer

The Blues are mourning the loss Tuesday of former player Mark Reeds, who died of cancer. He was 55.

Reeds had been an assistant coach with the Ottawa Senators since the 2011-12 season. According to the Ottawa Citizen, he was hospitalized with pneumonia and being treated in St. Louis.

Reeds was a fifth-round pick of the Blues (86th overall) in 1979. In six seasons (1981-87), the forward played in 320 games with the club, posting 45 goals and 150 points. He had eight goals and 17 points in 53 playoff games.

• Blackhawks star forward Patrick Kane is expected to be in the lineup for Game 1 of Chicago's opening-round playoff series against the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night. Kane, who broke his collarbone in February, received medical clearance to play on Monday.

• San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan has been picked as head coach for Canada's national team at the upcoming World Championship. Hockey Canada made the announced that McLellan will run the team for the tournament in the Czech Republic from May 1-17.
