Washington Capitals winger Andre Burakovsky will have minor surgery to repair an upper-body injury and miss the rest of the first-round series against Columbus.

Coach Barry Trotz said Burakovsky, 23, could return if his team advances deeper in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Burakovsky was injured in Game 2 Sunday on a hit by Blue Jackets forward Boone Jenner.

Burakovsky had been playing in a top-six role for the Capitals in the first round after putting up 12 goals in 56 regular-season games.

Bergeron skates

Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron was back on the ice on the team's off-day, and coach Bruce Cassidy said it will be a game-day decision whether he plays in Game 5 Saturday against Toronto.

Bergeron missed Game 4 on Thursday because of an undisclosed injury — a surprise to the Maple Leafs, who had no warning he was hurt. The Bruins won 3-1 in Toronto to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven first-round series.

'Canes coach resigns

Bill Peters resigned as coach and general manager of Carolina, with one year remaining on a contract extension he signed in 2016. Peters went 137-138-53 in four seasons.
