The league announced Monday, Dec. 29, 2014 that Suh was suspended for stepping on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' left leg twice, once with each foot. Suh also applied pressure and pushed off Rodgers' unprotected leg with his left foot, violating unnecessary roughness rules, the league said in a statement. He will miss Sun

Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh can play in Detroit's wild-card game after his one-game NFL suspension was reduced to a $70,000 fine.

Hearing officer Ted Cottrell heard Suh's expedited appeal Tuesday and ruled that he can play Sunday at Dallas but must pay the fine.

Suh originally was suspended for stepping on Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' left leg twice last Sunday in a loss to Green Bay for the NFC North title. He stepped on Rodgers once with each foot, which violated unnecessary roughness rules, according to the league.

But Cottrell, jointly appointed by the NFL and the players' union, rescinded the suspension.

Suh has a long list of fines and one previous suspension, for two games in 2011 for stepping on the right arm of Packers lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith. Suh has been fined eight times in his career, but this is the first in 2014.

Coughlin to return

Tom Coughlin will be back on the sideline next season for the Giants, who are coming off a 13-19 two-season stretch that the 68-year-old coach said has made him "as sick and disappointed as anybody."

Coughlin, who has led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles during his 11 seasons with New York, received a vote of confidence from ownership following the team's worst season since going 6-10 in 2004.

"We still believe in him," Giants President John Mara said. "I believe that the players still feel very strongly about him. And the one thing that struck me during the season, even as bad as things got during that seven- game losing streak, they still played hard for him. Their effort never waned, even when the results weren't there."

Rodgers says he'll be OK

Aaron Rodgers is confident his left calf will feel better when the Packers play their first postseason game in a couple weeks.

Rodgers had to be carted into the locker room with the injury in the second quarter of Sunday's NFC North-clinching 30-20 victory over Detroit. He came back in the third quarter, passing for a touchdown and scoring on a quarterback sneak from the 1.

Rodgers said on his radio show that didn't know if he would be 100 percent for the Packers' divisional round game on Jan. 11, though he was confident he would be "in a better spot" with the rest afforded by the first-round bye.

Etc.

• The Steelers signed former Vikings running back Ben Tate as insurance for injured Le'Veon Bell, even though coach Mike Tomlin did not rule out the possibility of the team's MVP playing in Saturday night's wild-card playoff game against the Ravens.

• The Raiders are scheduled to interview former NFL head coaches Eric Mangini and Pat Shurmur for their opening. Mangini has been with the 49ers the past two seasons. Shurmur spent the past two seasons as the Eagles offensive coordinator.

• The Jaguars fired offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch after two lackluster seasons. Jacksonville could reach out to fired Bears coach Marc Trestman, who is close friends with Jaguars coach Gus Bradley.

• Dallas defensive tackle Henry Melton will miss the playoffs because of a right knee injury sustained in the regular-season finale.
