NFL notes: Despite benching, Kaepernick still will start for 49ers

December 7, 2016 at 5:00AM

Colin Kaepernick is keeping his starting job after getting benched during one of the worst performances of his career.

San Francisco offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said Tuesday that the embattled quarterback will start when the 49ers (1-11) host the Jets (3-9) on Sunday. Kaepernick completed only one pass in three quarters in a 26-6 loss to the Bears on Sunday.

Kaepernick was removed from the game for Blaine Gabbert in the fourth quarter after taking five sacks and completing one pass, which came midway through the second quarter.

"We just decided during the game to try to see if Blaine could give us a spark, and Kap's been the starter," Modkins said. "It's nothing other than that."

San Francisco finished with only 6 net yards passing after the weather dictated a heavy reliance on the running game. Gabbert completed four of his 10 attempts for 35 yards and took a safety after the game was out of hand.

"I was just watching how the ball was coming off [Kaepernick's] hands and what our chances were of completing it," 49ers coach Chip Kelly said.

Jets go with Petty

Jets coach Todd Bowles was toeing the fine line between trying to win games and preparing for the future.

So, about two to three weeks ago, Bowles decided that if his team's playoff hopes were over, he would turn to Bryce Petty at quarterback for the final four games and send Ryan Fitzpatrick to the sideline.

The Jets were mathematically eliminated from the postseason picture on Monday night, and in epic fashion while getting blown out 41-10 by the Colts.

Bowles announced after the loss that he was going with Petty the rest of the season. Until late Monday night, the coach had justified starting Fitzpatrick the past few games by saying he thought the veteran gave New York the best chance to win.

Suspensions

• The NFL suspended Packers defensive tackle Mike Pennel for the last four games of the regular season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy after serving a four-game ban to start the year. Pennel will be eligible to return if the Packers (6-6) make the playoffs.

• Colts linebacker D'Qwell Jackson was suspended for four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. He will be eligible to return to the active roster on Jan. 2, a day after the team's regular-season finale against Jacksonville.

Etc.

• The Lions signed running back Joique Bell, bringing the Michigan native back for another stint with the franchise in the Motor City. Bell played 60 games for the Lions from 2012-15. He rushed for 860 yards and seven touchdowns during the 2014 season.

• The Buccaneers bolstered their injury-depleted receiving group, promoting Josh Huff from the practice squad to the active roster and placing Cecil Shorts III on injured reserve Tuesday. Shorts suffered a season-ending knee injury during Sunday's 28-21 victory at San Diego.
