NFL notes: Cowboys sign Sanchez, mull options on Romo

September 5, 2016 at 4:32AM

The Dallas Cowboys signed Mark Sanchez as a backup quarterback and are keeping their options open with injured Tony Romo.

Dallas added Sanchez to the 53-man roster on a one-year contract Sunday while waiving Jameill Showers with the likely intention of adding the second-year player to the practice squad if another team doesn't claim him.

Rookie Dak Prescott is set to start Sunday's season opener against the New York Giants, but the key to the quarterback puzzle remains Romo, who broke a bone in his back in a preseason game against Seattle.

The Cowboys can place him on the injured reserve-return list, which would free up a roster while sidelining the 36-year-old for the first seven games.

If Dallas decides to keep Romo on the active roster, he can return whenever he is ready. The Cowboys haven't said how long he will be out following his fourth back injury in less than four years.

Bears release Gould

The Bears released veteran kicker Robbie Gould, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Chicago is expected to sign kicker Connor Barth, who was among the Saints' final cuts this weekend.

Gould, 34, leaves as the team's all-time leading scorer with 1,207 points. He was the most accurate kicker in team history and, at 85.4 percent, ranks ninth in NFL history.

Etc.

• Texans defensive end J.J. Watt passed his physical and will return to practice on Monday, a good sign he will be ready for Houston's opener against Chicago on Sept. 11. Watt missed all of training camp and the Texans' four preseason games after surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back in July.

• The Ravens signed former Navy star Keenan Reynolds to their practice squad to be a receiver and punt returner. He scored an NCAA-record 88 rushing touchdowns as Navy's quarterback … The Ravens and veteran kick returner Devin Hester agreed on a one-year contract.
