The Indianapolis Colts used the first part of the offseason to invest in their defense.

Now comes the offense.

The Colts traded up to No. 41 with Cleveland to take Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor in the second round Friday, seven picks after General Manager Chris Ballard grabbed USC receiver Michael Pittman Jr. Another receiver, Clemson's Tee Higgins, went No. 33 to the Bengals to start Round 2.

Indy gave up its original second-round pick, No. 44 overall, and a fifth-rounder to get Taylor, a 5-10, 226-pound back who became the first player in Division I history to top the 6,000-yard mark in three seasons, finishing his Badgers career with back-to-back 2,000-yard seasons.

Taylor impressed scouts with a 4.39-second 40 at the combine, though he also lost 15 fumbles in college and had a heavy workload with 926 carries.

Pittman caught 101 passes for 1,275 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Trojans. At 6-4 and 223 pounds, he gives the Colts a bigger body to work opposite Pro Bowl receiver T.Y. Hilton. Pittman's father was an NFL running back for 11 seasons with Arizona, Tampa Bay and Denver.

Philadelphia snags Hurts

The Eagles took Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts with the 53rd overall pick to back up Carson Wentz, who signed a $137 million contract extension last season. Hurts transferred from Alabama to Oklahoma and became a Heisman Trophy finalist last year when he threw for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Ratings explode

The first night of the virtual NFL draft averaged a record 15.6 million viewers, easily shattering the record set six years ago. Thursday's first round was aired on ABC, ESPN, the NFL Network and ESPN Deportes. It was a rare live sports event during the coronavirus pandemic and a high-profile one.

The coverage peaked from 8:45-9 p.m. Eastern time when 19.6 million viewers tuned in, according to Nielsen. That is up 37% over last year's 11.4 million. The previous high was 12.4 million in 2014, when the draft was held in early May.

Texans extend Tunsil

The Houston Texans signed Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a three-year, $66 million extension.

Tunsil, who had one year left on his contract that will pay him $10.35 million this season, becomes the highest-paid offensive tackle in the NFL.

The Texans acquired Tunsil and receiver Kenny Stills in a trade with Miami in August, shipping this year's first-round pick and their picks in the first and second rounds in 2021 to the Dolphins.

Tunsil's presence immediately improved a line that gave up an NFL-leading 62 sacks in 2018. Houston surrendered only 44 sacks last season.

Cap help from Goff

The Rams announced the free-agent signings of linebacker Leonard Floyd and defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson, after quarterback Jared Goff restructured his contract to create salary cap room.

Goff agreed last year to a four-year contract extension with an NFL-record $110 million guaranteed. The extension doesn't begin until the 2021 season, but Goff agreed to restructure the deal's money distribution.

Los Angeles is stretched near the limits of the cap even after releasing running back Todd Gurley, trading receiver Brandin Cooks and losing several key players in free agency.

Pats on board

New England made its first pick — 37th overall — and chose Division II safety Kyle Dugger from Lenoir-Rhyne. Dugger not only was the first non-FBS player selected but only the second from a non-Power Five conference, behind Utah State QB Jordan Love.
