One of the best things Summit Brewing has done in a long time just keeps getting better. The St. Paul brewery's Unchained Beer series continues with next week's release of Black Ale. The dark, hoppy ale is the eighth entry into the popular series. For each Unchained installment, Summit gives one of its brewers free rein to create any beer style they want. The result is a small batch release (many of which have wowed local beer fans).

Black Ale is brewer Mike Lundell second entry into the series, following his India Style Rye Ale. This time he's cooked up something perfect for the Halloween season. Here's Summit's description of Black Ale:

"A medium-bodied brew, the Black Ale evokes citrus, passion fruit and peppery notes inspired by exotic hops from Australia and New Zealand. The addition of Cara Wheat gives the beer a nice caramel, toasted flavor, and provides contrast to the darker Carafa III Special and Midnight Wheat malt varieties. It’s also dry-hopped with Galaxy and Pacific Jade for extra aroma."

The brew will be available on tap at area bars starting the week of Oct. 24 and then in bottles the week of Nov. 7. There are several events surrounding the release of Black Ale. here's a look:

• Noon Oct. 24: Black Ale release party at Muddy Waters.
• 6 p.m. Oct. 26: Beer School at the Republic.
• 6 p.m. Nov. 2: Urban Eatery Beer Dinner.
• 7-9 p.m. Nov. 3: The Nook “Burgers, Bowling, and Beer” event.
