New rules for sunscreen labels

June 7, 2013 at 9:12PM

Broad Spectrum

Means product passed a test showing it protects against both UVB and UVA rays. UVA rays contribute to skin cancer and early skin aging.

Water Resistant

New rules ban words such as "waterproof" and "sweatproof." Manufacturers may only use "water resistant" and must specify how long before the sunscreen washes off, for example, 80 minutes.

SPF number

Stands for "sun protection factor." Experts recommend using sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15.

Skin cancer/ skin aging alert

Products with lower SPFs must include this warning label, telling users the sunscreen is only effective in preventing sunburn, not skin cancer or early skin aging.
