Spring break can be a tricky time to hit the skies because so many travelers, both seasoned and novice, are flying. So if you're heading to the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) during the next few weeks on your way to sunnier climes, heed the following suggestions to make your journey more pleasant.

During spring break and other busy travel seasons, parking can be tight, particularly in the general ramp at Terminal 1 (formerly known as Lindbergh). You'll find cheaper parking in Terminal 2 (Humphrey), which is connected to Terminal 1 via light rail. If you want to check ahead, let technology be your friend and sign up for parking-related text alerts and check current parking availability by going to www.mspairport.com/parking/surepark.aspx.

Arrive at the airport at least two hours before your departure for domestic destinations, three hours for international. During busy travel times airlines can start bumping passengers who have not checked in or who are not at the boarding gate 30 minutes before departure.

Don't keep the kids cooped up before the flight. MSP has two airport play areas: one in Terminal 1 near gate C12 and the other in Terminal 2 near gate H6. There's also a Family Center in Terminal 1 that provides a quiet resting place for parents and small children near the entrance to Concourse E. It includes a family rest room, comfortable seating, a rocking chair and a crib.

Stay connected and up-to-date by becoming a fan of MSP on Facebook. You can also sign up for Twitter updates, including information about parking, airport events, sales and specials in the more than 100 shops and restaurants at the airport. You can also find deals and specials, along with 40 coupons, at www.shopsatmsp.com.

Airport baggage restrictions -- and fees -- are more stringent than ever. Check with your airline before you fly to make sure that you're not packing too much. This is particularly important for those traveling with skis, golf clubs and other sports equipment.
