Inmate fatally shoots 2 deputies
Two Kansas sheriff's deputies were shot and killed by an inmate while taking him between the courthouse and jail. The inmate shot Wyandotte County Sheriff's deputies Theresa King and Patrick Rohrer on Friday. The shooter may have used one of the deputies' guns during a struggle after he got out of the van, authorities said. The inmate underwent surgery for gunshot wounds. Rohrer, 35, who died shortly after the shooting, leaves behind two children. King, 44, who had three children, died Saturday at a hospital.

Local owner takes over L.A. Times
A biotech billionaire will officially take control of the Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union-Tribune on Monday. Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong is spending $500 million for the two news groups, Spanish-language newspaper Hoy and some community newspapers from Chicago-based Tronc. The deal, announced Feb. 7, returns the Times to local ownership after nearly two decades under turbulent Chicago control. The new owner plans to move the newsroom to suburban El Segundo.

Taxi crashes into pedestrians
Eight people, including two from Mexico, were injured Saturday when a taxi crashed into pedestrians on a sidewalk near Red Square in Moscow. The driver was arrested but preliminary information indicated he lost control of the vehicle. Russia is hosting the World Cup and the capital's streets have been crowded with foreign visitors. The crash happened about 650 feet from Red Square. The city health department said seven of the injured were in satisfactory condition and one was in more serious condition.

No-confidence vote fails
Lawmakers rejected a no-confidence motion in the government brought by the main opposition party over a deal to change the name of Macedonia and end a decades-old dispute with Greece's northern neighbor. Lawmakers voted 153-127 in the parliament against the motion to oust the left-led government over the deal renaming the former Yugoslav republic North Macedonia. Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
