Two opposition leaders executed

Two influential opposition leaders were executed for war crimes during the country’s 1971 independence war against Pakistan. Nationalist Party leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid were convicted by a tribunal in 2013 on charges including genocide, rape and torture.

 

Cameroon

10 dead in border suicide bombing

At least 10 people were killed in an attack by four suicide bombers. The terrorist group Boko Haram was suspected in the attack in Fotokol. The bombers were women wearing burqas, said Maj. Nlate Ebale. Fotokol, on Cameroon’s border with Nigeria, has been a repeated target of the Islamist terrorist group.

Four Israelis wounded in stabbing

An assailant stabbed and wounded four Israelis, including a 13-year-old girl, before fleeing the scene, setting off a large manhunt. The attack appeared to be part of a two-month spree of violence ignited by tensions surrounding a sensitive holy site.

Brakes prompt Hyundai recall

Hyundai is recalling about 305,000 of its 2011-12 Sonata models because the automatic transmission could be moved out of park without pressing the brake pedal, allowing the car to roll away, according to a report posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

 

Myanmar

Landslide near jade mine kills dozens

A community leader says a landslide near a jade mine in northern Myanmar has killed up to 60 people and left more than 100 others unaccounted for. Most of them are villagers who were sifting through a mountain of tailings and waste when the landslide hit in Kachin state. The region is home to some of the world’s highest quality jade, bringing in billions of dollars a year.

 

Illinois

Five injured in skyscraper fire

Five people were injured in a fire in a residential unit on the 50th floor of the 99-story John Hancock Center in Chicago that sent smoke billowing into the air. After declaring two alarms, the Fire Department said that the fire was out. The Fire Department’s media office tweeted that of the injured, two were in good condition and three were stable.
