Obamas gave $70,712 to charity in 2014

President Obama and his wife, Michelle, earned $477,383 in adjusted gross income in 2014, a slight decrease from the previous year, and paid $93,362 in federal taxes. Most of Obama's income comes from his $400,000 salary as president, and book royalties totaled $94,889. The Obamas donated $70,712 — about 15 percent of their income — to various charities.


Man charged with suicide bombing plot

A 20-year-old Topeka man was charged with plotting to detonate a suicide car bomb at Fort Riley. John T. Booker Jr. told a government informant that he wanted to strike the military installation, according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court. Booker bought materials to make a bomb, rented a storage locker and filmed a video saying he was acting for Islamic extremists.


Gentler hurricane season is forecast

The upcoming hurricane season could be one of the quietest in decades with only seven named storms, including three hurricanes, one major. That's the initial forecast of Phil Klotzbach and William Gray of Colorado State University. They say the emergence of El Niño and cooler Atlantic waters should keep the number of systems in check. If their projections hold true, it would amount to less than half of the normal tropical activity; the average season sees 12 named storms.


Penalty phase of marathon trial set

The second phase of the trial of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will begin on April 21, after the second anniversary of the attack and the day after this year's race. U.S. District Judge George O'Toole Jr. granted a request from Tsarnaev's lawyers to give the defense additional time to resolve logistical issues with witnesses. Tsarnaev, 21, was convicted Wednesday in the 2013 attack, which killed three people and injured more than 260.


Seven injured in car bombing at mall

A car bomb exploded at a shopping mall on a Thai island popular with foreign tourists for its pristine beaches, injuring seven people. The improvised bomb was hidden in a pickup truck and went off in the basement of the Central Festival mall on Samui Island in Surat Thani province. Authorities believed the vehicle was stolen from one of the Thai provinces plagued by Islamic insurgency. More than 5,000 people have been killed in those provinces since 2004.
