Mormons inject diversity into top leadership

The Mormon church made history and injected diversity into a top leadership panel on Saturday by selecting the first-ever Latin American apostle and the first-ever apostle of Asian ancestry. The selections of Ulisses Soares of Brazil and Gerrit Gong, a Chinese-American, were announced at the start of a twice-annual church conference in Salt Lake City.

Ingraham is taking a week off

Fox News host Laura Ingraham has announced that she's taking a week off following the decision of several companies to pull advertising from her show after she ridiculed a student survivor of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting. Fox News said that Ingraham's break was a "preplanned vacation with her kids."

Clark's family joins rally in Sacramento

The family of Stephon Clark joined hundreds at a rally Saturday, urging California's capital city not to let his memory or calls for police reform fade nearly two weeks after the 22-year-old unarmed black man was killed by Sacramento police. Clark's fiancée, Salena Manni, stood on stage with his two young sons, grandmother and uncle for the gathering organized by former NBA player Matt Barnes, who pledged to create a scholarship fund for children of black men killed by police.

Governor continues Easter pardon practice

California Gov. Jerry Brown pardoned five immigrants with criminal records who face possible deportation, continuing his tradition of granting clemency around the Easter holiday. The five individuals were among 56 pardons granted by Brown, as well as 14 sentence commutations for current inmates.

Tibetan leader calls for Dalai Lama's return

The prime minister of the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile in India is urging his compatriots to strengthen efforts to make the return of the Dalai Lama to his native land a reality. Lobsang Sangay said Tibet has seen 60 years of destruction of its civilization, culture and identity by the Chinese since the Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959.

Militants warned against more violence

Israel will target militant groups inside Gaza if violence along the border with Israel drags on, the chief military spokesman warned, a day after 15 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire. On Saturday, small groups of Palestinians threw stones near the border fence, drawing Israeli fire that injured 25 people.
