Wildfire grows to 20,500 acres overnight
The state's first major wildfire of the year grew to more than 20,500 acres overnight after destroying one home, forcing thousands more to evacuate and sending up a plume of smoke so massive that it generated its own winds. The Apple fire in Riverside County was burning up steep and rugged hillsides as it spread north and east toward the San Gorgonio Wilderness while continuing to threaten homes to the south. The fire had burned at least 20,516 acres and was 0% contained as of Sunday morning. The terrain is characterized by a web of narrow canyons and drainage channels.

Prison unrest injures 3 inmates, 2 staff
Three inmates and two staff members were injured during unrest at a state prison in southeast Georgia that began Saturday night, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. The disturbance began at around 10:45 p.m. Saturday, and the facility was locked down by around 1 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

U.K., U.S. trade czars meet for more talks
U.K. International Trade Secretary Liz Truss will meet with her U.S. counterpart Robert Lighthizer in Washington on Monday as part of the third round of talks to reach a trade deal between the two countries. Prime Minister Boris Johnson put an agreement with the U.S. at the heart of his plans for the U.K. economy after Brexit, and Truss' decision to travel during the pandemic reflects London's commitment to a deal. The talks have been beset by disagreements, over agriculture in particular.
Afghanistan
ISIS says it attacked prison, fought guards
Militants attacked a major prison in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, detonating a car bomb and waging a gun battle against guards for hours, as dozens of inmates managed to escape, Afghan officials said.
At least three people died and 24 others were injured. The attack in the city of Jalalabad came at a time when the issue of releasing insurgent fighters from prison has moved to the forefront of efforts to strike a peace deal. Disagreement over the last batch of prisoners to be released has delayed the next steps of an agreement reached in February between the United States and the Taliban, and the start of direct talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government. But other militant groups that are also fighting the government were not party to that agreement, and one of those, ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mexico
Drug cartel leader 'El Marro' is arrested
Mexican authorities arrested the leader of the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel, a gang known for stealing millions of dollars of fuel from government pipelines and for turning once-peaceful Guanajuato State into one of the most dangerous regions in the country. Videos show the predawn capture by federal and state authorities of Jose Antonio Yepez Ortiz, who is known by the alias "El Marro," which means "the Sledgehammer." He was detained along with five others in a raid that authorities said also freed a kidnapped businesswoman. The capture of Yepez Ortiz is one of the most high-profile arrests by the Mexican government in years.
