Suspect in deputy’s killing has long record

The man charged in the fatal shooting of a uniformed suburban Houston sheriff’s deputy had a lengthy criminal record going back a decade, but never spent more than short stints in jail. Shannon J. Miles, whose criminal record includes convictions for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct with a firearm, was to be arraigned Monday.



Huge natural gas field said to be discovered

The Italian energy company Eni SpA announced that it has discovered a “supergiant” natural gas field off Egypt, describing it as the “largest-ever” found in the Mediterranean Sea. The news came a day after Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi met in Cairo with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. Eni said the discovery — made in its Zohr prospect “in the deep waters of Egypt” — could hold a potential 30 trillion cubic feet of gas.



Boko Haram kills 68 in village, official says

The governor of Borno in northeast Nigeria says Boko Haram has killed 68 villagers in a remote area of his state. Kashim Shettima on Sunday confirmed the attack without providing details during a meeting with the parents of the 219 girls abducted from a school by the terrorist group last year. Thursday marked 500 days of captivity for the girls from a school in Chibok.



Erika kills at least 20 with 50 missing

Rescue teams worked Sunday to reopen roads to remote communities in Dominica after Tropical Storm Erika caused flooding and mudslides that killed at least 20 people and left more than 50 missing on the Caribbean island. The government ordered the evacuation of about 1,000 inhabitants from the small town of Petite-Savanne, fearing new landslides.
