14 die when smuggler's boat capsizes

At least 14 Haitians died when a twin-engine outboard boat smuggling migrants to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Atlantic capsized in shark-infested waters, the islands' police force said. Police said 14 individuals were rescued before the search-and-rescue operation was suspended late Sunday until daybreak Monday. The islands' police marine branch had been alerted that a boat transporting undocumented migrants from Haiti had capsized off West Caicos, an uninhabited island in the British overseas territory.

Derailed tanker cars detonated

A massive fireball soared into the sky in the central Utah desert as officials blew up 11 derailed tanker cars containing propane and biodiesel. The controlled detonation Sunday night was the safest way to deal with the explosive material, Juab County authorities said Monday about the decision by state and federal agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency. Saturday's derailment involved 24 of the 165 cars of a Union Pacific freight train. One car landed on its side and was leaking propane. The conductor and engineer were not hurt.

One person has died of cholera and 97 patients remain in treatment centers, with the others released. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said there is also a high risk of the spread of infectious diseases including those caused by mosquitoes, with 276 malaria cases also reported.
