A Minnesota pickup truck driver was killed in a collision with a teenage North Dakota motorist who said she fell asleep before her SUV strayed to the other side of the interstate, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 8:25 a.m. Monday on Interstate 94 in Jamestown, about 95 miles west of Fargo, according to the Highway Patrol.
Killed was David Herold, 61, of Garfield, Minn., the patrol said. The passenger in his pickup, Matthew Schroeder, 35, of Dalton, Minn., was hospitalized with noncritical injuries, as was SUV driver Ashley Birkle, 18, of Killdeer.
The eastbound SUV went through the median and struck the westbound pickup, killing Herold instantly, according to the patrol.
Birkle “stated that she fell asleep” moments before the crash, the patrol said in a statement.
