A motorcycle struck a deer that darted onto a dark country road in northwestern Minnesota, leaving the passenger dead and her husband, who was driving, injured, authorities said Sunday.

The collision occurred northeast of Crookston about 8:50 p.m. Saturday on westbound County Road 57, about a mile east of County Road 13, according to the State Patrol.

Corey L. Reitmeier was hospitalized with noncritical injuries, the patrol said. Saturday was his 44th birthday.

The patrol said Reitmeier's wife was killed. Her name has yet to be officially released, but public records identify her as Wendy S. Reitmeier, 43. The patrol said neither rider had on a helmet.

Wendy Reitmeier worked for the Polk County Sheriff's Office, whose personnel responded to the crash.

The department did not respond to a message on Sunday seeking more information about Wendy Reitmeier's employment.
