Nicholas Castellanos and Mikie Mahtook went deep, and the Detroit Tigers proceeded to trounce Kansas City 10-2 to open a four-game series Monday night in Kansas City, Mo.

Ian Kinsler added three extra-base hits for the Tigers, who knocked American League wins leader Jason Vargas (12-4) from the game after 2 ⅔ innings in his first start since the All-Star break.

"His pitches were kind of flat. It's just one of those nights for him," manager Ned Yost said.

Winner Jordan Zimmermann allowed one run and seven hits without a walk in 6 ⅔ innings, throwing 79 of 97 pitches for strikes. However, one pitch that got away struck Alcides Escobar on the left wrist, forcing him out of the game.

Seattle 9, Houston 7 (10): Kyle Seager and Danny Valencia hit back-to-back homers in the 10th inning for the Mariners in Houston. Astros All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa left in the fourth inning after jamming his left thumb on a swing; he jammed the same thumb on a headfirst slide July 4. Houston used a four-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run homer by Carlos Beltran, to take a 6-5 lead.

Toronto 4, Boston 3: Steve Pearce hit a solo homer, then added the go-ahead single in the eighth inning in the Blue Jays' victory at Fenway Park.

Tampa Bay 3, Oakland 2: Evan Longoria's fifth-inning homer held up for the Rays in Oakland, Calif.

Baltimore 3, Texas 1: Seth Smith hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning for the host Orioles, whose struggling pitching staff combined on a three-hitter. Texas' Adrian Beltre had two hits, moving him within 18 of 3,000.

National League

Pittsburgh 4, Milwaukee 2: Gregory Polanco doubled twice, drove in two runs and threw out a potential go-ahead run at the plate as the Pirates beat the visiting Brewers. Milwaukee catcher Stephen Vogt left the game in the fifth inning for evaluation for a neck and knee strain after a collision with Pirates pitcher Chad Kuhl at the plate.

Colorado 9, San Diego 6: Charlie Blackmon 's fourth leadoff homer of the season hit the facing of the third deck, and the host Rockies posted their first back-to-back victories in nearly a month.

Chicago 4, Atlanta 3: Winner Jon Lester bounced back from the shortest start of his career by allowing one run in seven innings. The host Braves scored twice in the ninth off Cubs closer Wade Davis but left the bases loaded.

Washington 6, Cincinnati 1: Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper hit home runs as the Nationals completed a four-game sweep in Cincinnati. Stephen Strasburg struck out 11 in seven innings.

Miami 6, Philadelphia 5 (10): Giancarlo Stanton homered twice and drove in three runs before Dee Gordon's RBI single won it for the host Marlins with two outs in the 10th inning.

St. Louis 6, New York 3: Paul DeJong homered against the Mets for the fourth straight game and Adam Wainwright drove in a run and won his fourth consecutive start, at Citi Field.

Interleague

Cleveland 5, San Francisco 3: Francisco Lindor led the visiting Indians with three hits and two RBI, and Josh Tomlin struck out five and pitched into the eighth inning to win back-to-back starts for the first time this year.
